Food and Agriculture

Agriculture is the backbone of Africa’s economy. It accounts for 70 percent of full-time employment in the continent. About 70 percent of the population of Africa and roughly 80 percent of its poor live in rural areas and depend mainly on this sector (agriculture) for their livelihood. It is therefore obvious that anytime Africa’s agriculture fails to perform adequately, the majority of its people inevitably fail to meet their basic food, health care and other needs. Water Supply and Sanitation

The water supply and sanitation coverage in Africa is very poor. Recent data show that only 58 per cent of the Sub- Saharan African populations have access to sufficient and safe water. Rehabilitation of the Underprivileged

Millions of disabled, refugees, displaced, orphans and other severely under-privileged agonize day after day in precarious conditions in the slums and the streets of Africa. These are the victims of accidents, diseases, famine and malnutrition, civil strife and natural calamities. They include blind, deaf, dumb, crippled and street children. Technology

Technological backwardness generally characterizes Africa’s road to development. This continent does not fully use available and free technologies that have helped the developed and the newly industrial countries achieve their present level of development. According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), enough technologies are available which, if used, can raise the continent’s agriculture to the high producing status that is found today in the North and many countries of the South.
